The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain calls from the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
