Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
